How do you smoothly handle an unexpected surge in website traffic?
About the project
The client is a leading retailer of children's equipment, operating in the German market. The migration to Monogo Cloud took place in June 2021.
The e-commerce site hosted on the Monogo Cloud infrastructure handled the unexpected increase in sales while keeping the site running fully smoothly. The number of orders increased by 16 times compared to the statistics of the average number of transactions from the same period year-on-year.
The infrastructure was able to scale automatically without human intervention. The system accepted and handled a huge number of orders - at its peak a new order was created every 2 seconds.
Challenges
The sudden increase in visits to the site was not a planned marketing campaign. The increased traffic to the site started in the middle of the night, after 11 p.m. In the first hour, 1 255 orders were placed. A total of 2,761 orders were placed in six hours, overnight. At the peak, orders were placed every 2-5 seconds. The number of orders exceeded the average daily orders in the shop by 28 times.
Solutions
How did the infrastructure perform during the sales peak?
Because our client's infrastructure was based on the Monogo Cloud solution, the unexpected sales peak was handled without any interruption to the site. The auto-scaling function was automatically enabled. A 1600% increase in the number of orders was processed smoothly, without reporting additional alerts about performance issues.
The Monogo Cloud infrastructure includes multi-dimensional autoscaling capabilities:
- Horizontal Pod Autoscaling (HPA) - in the event of increased traffic, additional pods are created within the available server resources,
- Vertical Autoscaling - when the allocated server resources are fully utilised, additional resources are made available.
Automatic auto-scaling mechanisms
The Horizontal Pod Autoscaling (HPA) and Vertical Autoscaling mechanisms operate automatically, without human intervention, and can easily scale in the event of unexpected increases in traffic and sales. The system responded automatically at the time of an unexpected increase in traffic, allowing a large number of orders to be handled and preventing the site from crashing.
